The neighborhood of North Park is located in the city and county of San Diego, California. According to city-data.com, whose information dates from 2011, the neighborhood spans 2.984 square miles with a population of approximately 33,253 residents. The community has a population density of 11,143 people per square mile and the median household income in 2011 was $52,481. The neighborhood has a mix of architectural styles from several different eras with Craftsman Bungalows, California Bungalows, Mission Revival, Mediterranean, Prairie and others. The neighborhood is home to the North Park Dryden Historic District which is also known as the “Dryden Historic District.”

In 1893, Joseph Nash sold 40 acres of land to James Hartley who planted a lemon grove. Water was scarce in the area and water had to be hauled from downtown San Diego. The ever-expanding city of San Diego closed in on the lemon grove, the grow became bordered by Ray Street, 32nd Street, University Avenue and Dwight Street. The grove was deemed “Hartley’s North Park” and today it is still known as North Park. In 1911, Hartley’s son and another relative William Jay Stevens began to develop the area that had been a lemon grove and it grew into one of San Diego’s first commercial and residential districts. Today it is a thriving neighborhood with walkable streets, high rise buildings like the Stevens building as well as apartments and single family homes.

North Park was named among America’s Best Hipster Neighborhoods by Forbes magazine.

North Park is a lively and unique mix of residential and commercial areas with diners, microbreweries, boutiques and coffee shops. North Park was named among America’s Best Hipster Neighborhoods by Forbes magazine. The community has a weekly farmers market on Thursdays and is home to numerous art galleries which host the Ray Street Arts District hosts “Ray at Night” a gallery walk held monthly. Other annual events include the North Park Toyland Parade every December and the North Park Music Thing, which is a large musical festival. The Lyric Opera of San Diego performs at the nearby Birch North Park Theatre.
