The community of Alpine spans 26.785 square miles and has a mild Mediterranean climate with warm summers and mild winters. The name Alpine was suggested by a resident, whose native home was Switzerland, because she thought the environments were similar. The community of Alpine serves as a suburb of San Diego as well as a nice little community unto itself.

The area was originally inhabited by the Kumeyaay tribe who settled there over 1000 years ago. In later history the area that would one day become Alpine served as a stage stop for those bringing supplies to miners working the gold mines of the Cuyamaca Mountains. Benjamin R. Reynold settled in the area in 1887 and finding the climate beneficial for his asthma he opened a hotel for others suffering from the affliction. After a government survey deemed the area as having the best climate in the country the town took on as their main slogan. Today the community that is nestled in the foothills features small ranches and homes often with estate sized lots, some are even zoned for keeping horses and other animals.
