In 1893, Joseph Nash sold 40 acres of land to James Hartley who planted a lemon grove. Water was scarce in the area and water had to be hauled from downtown San Diego. The ever-expanding city of San Diego closed in on the lemon grove, the grow became bordered by Ray Street, 32nd Street, University Avenue and Dwight Street. The grove was deemed “Hartley’s North Park” and today it is still known as North Park. In 1911, Hartley’s son and another relative William Jay Stevens began to develop the area that had been a lemon grove and it grew into one of San Diego’s first commercial and residential districts. Today it is a thriving neighborhood with walkable streets, high rise buildings like the Stevens building as well as apartments and single family homes.
